Ok, I’ve spent a decent amount of time in CDMX—and by that I mean about a year.
A lot of peeps ask me about where to go and what to do in Mexico City.
And I know a place or two or three,
But I have something to admit to y’all…
Ok, now before I get into this, I want to VERY OPENLY ACKNOWLEDGE AND POINT OUT that I am a WHITE GIRL FROM THE UNITED STATES and this is just MY EXPERIENCE AND IMPRESSION OF MEXICAN CULTURE okay?!!
Now that that’s outta the way…. where TF to begin!?! Of course Mexican culture is different from the U.S. It’s a whole other country, with its own language(s), history and intrinsic built-in societal norms, y’all.
However, I do think one way we can separate some of the Mexican cultural norms into 3 P’s: Polite, Proud and Patriarchal. 👇👇
Welp, the cat’s out of the bag: Mexico is f*cking amazing.
Beaches, cities, incredible food, kind people and colorful, unique culture that ebbs and flows from north to south across the mountaintops—yeah. It’s got it all…
So, do you truly want to come here ✨ respectfully ✨ and experience everything this wonderful place has to offer? Here’s how to do it safely… and without lookin’ like a total gringo.
You might be wondering—how TF did I find an apartment in Mexico City within 3 days of arriving, anyway?
When I saw the positive COVID test result, needless to say, I was alarmed. I was in my room at U-Co, surrounded by all my clothes, shoes, bath stuff, towels, random acquired stuff like blankets and pillows (and even a heavy studio monitor/speaker)—and also surrounded by PEOPLE. There were probably 20-30 other folks in the hostel who, at this point, had been exposed. I felt horrible.
Wellllp, it happened. I got Covid.
Yes, I’m vaccinated—two shots of Pfizer, baby! Anyone remember hot girl summer? No? It feels like a long time ago.
To add to the fun, I’m in Mexico City.
Oh, Sayulita. I’ve spent maaaaany days, weeks, months, and sleepless nights in you. You are a magical portal that some people “get”, and some… don’t. First time we met, I got stuck in you for 4 months before finally prying myself away, nails dragging on your dirty ass cobblestone streets. You’ve long been a source of love, heartbreak, injury, bliss, great waves, weird drama, laughter, sexual energy, jungle spirits, house and techno music, delicious fish tacos, food poisoning, existential sunsets… you get the idea.
Sorry, got distracted by Sayulita there for a second (are we noticing a pattern here?), but here’s the deal—Sayu is an extremely safe surf town about an hour from Puerto Vallarta. It can be VERY touristy depending on what time of year you go (avoid Christmas/New Years/Semana Santa if you can), and it’s grown exponentially in recent years (like many surf towns in Mexico). Some people go there and are like ? I don’t get it ? which I totally understand.
